❄️ The holidays can be an emotional time, especially if you are living abroad and far from home. Nostalgia may bring memories of past celebrations—moments filled with love, warmth, and familiar traditions.
🍥 It’s normal for those who have relocated to feel a mix of emotions: joy, sadness, loneliness, or longing for what was and what you are missing.
Here are four ways to care for yourself and find comfort:
1. Be Kind to Yourself: Take a deep breath and make time for you. My go to is: a walk in the fresh air – this will boost your mood. Other ideas: go to bed early, read a good book, or a watch a cozy movie - all can lift your spirits.
2. Feel What You Feel: It’s normal to miss home and old traditions. Acknowledge those feelings and share them if you can. Reach out to a friend, even for a simple holiday coffee—connection helps.
3. Create New Traditions: Cook your favorite holiday dish and add a local twist to it. If you’re missing family dinners, invite friends or neighbors for a simple gathering. Small moments can bring warmth and connection.
4. Soak in the Beauty Around You: Cities sparkle this time of year, glowing with lights and decorations. Bundle up, head out, and take it all in. Notice the unique way the city is dressed up or pick your favorite decoration from your walk. Allow yourself to feel present, even if just for a moment—this is not dismissing the other feelings but nudging you toward enjoying what you are doing now.
Needing support at this time of year is not unusual for expats and those who have relocated. 🩷 If you would like talk more about this, contact me for a free 20 minute chat, I get it and am here to support you.
