Here is what I’ve learned about friendship as an expat:

As an international, I’ve learned some meaningful lessons about friendship.

Recently, I had the chance to reunite with my longtime friends from the U.S., the ones who truly know me, support me through both the highs and lows, and always make an effort to stay connected despite the distance. Even though we may not see each other often, it always feels like no time has passed when we’re together. During my trip, I shared some tough news that I was still processing, and they offered the exact support I needed. It was a reminder of how powerful and comforting these friendships are.

Leaving them to return home to Amsterdam was not easy.

But when I did get home, I was welcomed back into the friendships I’ve built over time in Amsterdam, and once again, I was met with care and support.

I was reminded about how lucky I am to have all of these friendships.

Here is what I’ve learned about friendship as an expat:

~You will miss your longtime friends who have known you forever. Keep nurturing those connections. They are priceless.

~You can make deep, meaningful friendships after a relocation, but it takes time, effort, and vulnerability. And it requires courage to open yourself up to new people.

~The key to lasting friendships is nurturing them with generosity, vulnerability, and support. Be there to celebrate the highs and be there for support during the lows.
