Stronger Together Abroad: Why I’m Hosting a Community Walk for Mental Health

A community walk in Amsterdam focused on connection, belonging, and mental wellbeing for internationals.

We are living in uncertain times.

And in my work as a counselor, I see how much that uncertainty can impact people’s sense of stability, belonging, and wellbeing — especially for those living abroad.

Living abroad can be deeply enriching. It brings new opportunities, perspectives, and growth.

But life doesn’t pause.

There are still moments of loss, illness, setbacks, homesickness, relationship changes, and career uncertainty, world uncertainty. And these experiences can feel heavier when you are far from what is familiar — even if you have built a life in a new place.

One thing I come back to again and again in my work is this:

Connection matters.

And yet, building connection abroad is not always easy.

It often requires vulnerability — putting yourself out there, not knowing how you will be received, and navigating new social and cultural environments.

At the same time, it is through these very steps that people begin to create something meaningful:

connection, shared understanding, support, and community.

I see how powerful that can be.

People feel less isolated, more supported, and more resilient.

This is also where walking comes in.

If you’ve followed my work, you’ll know that I often bring walking into what I do.

There is something about walking side by side that changes the dynamic. Conversations tend to feel easier. People open up in different ways. There is less pressure, and often a sense of relief that comes simply from being outside and moving.

I notice it in myself as well — how even a short walk can help me reset and feel more grounded.

Walking creates a natural environment for connection — to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us.

That’s why, as part of European Mental Health Week 2026, I'm partnering with MentalHealthEurope and I’m hosting a community walk:

Stronger Together Abroad: A Community Walk for Mental Health and Belonging in Amsterdam

📅 May 8

🕠 17:30–19:00

🆓 The walk is free, donations are accepted. All proceeds will to to De Regenboog Groep

This walk is for internationals, and for anyone who knows, supports, or cares about people living abroad. Kids are welcome, with an adult.

It will be a simple, accessible space to walk together, share conversation (or not), and experience how connection can support mental wellbeing.

Whether you come alone or with someone, you are welcome.

Because even in uncertain times, we are not meant to do this alone.

See you at the walk - I look forward to connecting with you.
